Career Exploration with Graphic Design Students

Every school year we have graphic design students that submit artwork they are most proud of to the Citywide Art Contest: High School Visual Art Exhibition -- and every year, HTEC celebrates those students who had work accepted into the contest. Moreover, we have students that are awarded for their excellent pieces of art. As mentioned on the DPS website, “A robust curriculum in visual art includes an understanding of conceptual ideas expressed through visual art skills and techniques. This annual juried exhibition showcases DPS high school student artwork that demonstrates and achieves a high standard of execution, vision, and creativity.” This is a huge achievement for our students and Mr. Wiant!

After the selection process is over, the artwork is then displayed in the atrium of the Wellington Webb Municipal building in downtown Denver. As such, we took a group of students down to view all the different pieces of work. It was a great opportunity for the students to see what other high school students are creating but to also find inspiration within the different forms of work. As a group, we asked students to identify their favorite piece and discussed why.

Next up was a visit to one of our closest creative business partners, Moore Collection, a design and t-shirt printing company that continues to grow their brand. Moore Collection originally partnered with HTEC through the CareerConnect Launch Internship Program. In fact, Moore has worked with three of our design seniors, Alfredo Saldivar-Mata, Tru Chapman and Hemily Madrigal-Delgado. Since their interns enjoyed the work so much, we thought it would be a great opportunity to bring other students to their studio, introduce their work, practice and explore the process of screen printing, and learn more about entrepreneurship and freelance designing.
